What am I doing ? Why am I there ? What am I saying? These dramaturgy questions I am continually asking in my practice and related activities I am apart of. In regard to this ceramics project, I like the idea of the 'other time' character. It allows another type approach to the plates to make sense. This stimulates creative imagination of others, as only then do they get access to the ideas, learning and culture of others, past and present. If we are aliens or event people from another time researching [doesn't have to be so dramatic] then it make more sense why we are engaging with these objects in unusual ways. I'm always bringing in extraordinary modes, drama and costume, of course, it's ok with a bit less. But it says something more than an everyday life type of approach. Field researchers from the future. let's say we want that element as it gives it more sense to why we are doing something surreal/abnormal with plates and of course it brings the time element into it, which the plates
themselves are time repositories" (MAURO-FLUDE, 2008)[i]

Patchingzone Intervention @ Museum GoudA

The Patchingzone's May 1st intervention at the ceramics days in Gouda. We will use this to switch on the lights of the photobooth when a photo is to be taken.
The microcontroller board implements DHCP and NETBIOS, has a build-in webserver and its I/O ports can be controlled by simple HTTP GET requests. The opto-relay is connected to port F7, and a red LED is connected to port B6. By switching both the LED and the power socket on and off simulaneously, you have a visual indication if the socket is powered on or not.
On: http://mxboard/?f7=1&b6=1
Off: http://mxboard/?f7=0&b6=0

9th of april - chat transcript

transcript

steps for the Library Opening

the main discussion today was about the format of the web application for the library opening. It was decided to make a system that can provide many choices to experiment with the different ideas we had about how to facilitate social networks having a book as the meeting point: photo booth, avatars, comment wall, book club...

8th of april

Meeting with Library/Archive team

It seems connecting the two-person-book-club to the Concerto library system isn't as easy as we hoped for. Also, we would need Coby and Ruud to help us set up and they're extremely busy with setting up the selfservice stations at Bloemendaal. We discussed some options to do a more low-tech version.

Do a papercard version (leave little notes on bookmarks and leave these in the books)

Do a photobooth version and connect the images and comments to a specific RFID key (place picnic reference here)

Do an ISBN version and get the data through a webservice

ISBN barcode scanning and webservices

To still get the metadata of a book we could use the ISBN number and a webservice to request the metadata. To get the ISBN number of a book we could scan the barcode (not the library barcode).

Webservices that we could use:

worldcat.org (this one is really good)

google book api

Barcode scanners apparently aren't that expensive. At posdata.nl there is a USB scanner available for 50 euros. It's a HID device that inputs the data as if it were a keyboard.

Clientside & Serverside
Marc and I thought it would be best to set the system up as a web application. The server-side logic and the database would run on Marc's server and the client application would be website built with action-/java-script. The client website/app uses the barcode scanner and a webcam. This way the system could be easily tweaker and maintained by us.

Todo

Order barcode scanner

Order webcam

Build system

Arrange computer at library

Arrange space at library

Build booth

Really think hard about the total experience/interface

    Tomorrow

Mirella and I will meet at Concordia tomorrow at 10.30. Read the 'transcript'. (add LINK)

Other ideas

The following is more an archiving of random ideas we had. We're moving more into the direction of the pen-pal idea. There are 500 balloons at the library. Have the balloons in an interactive installation. Pulling the strings from the helium balloons floating against ceiling triggers a part of a story. You can choose to go down a certain path in the nonlinear story structure or add another path if you don't like where the story is going.

This could also be a collaborative instrument.
